Cryptocurrency Exchange ShapeShift To Stay Offline For At Least Another 48 Hours

Cryptocurrency exchange platform ShapeShift.io continues to be offline following a security breach that took place last week.

In a Reddit post, Erik Voorhees, ShapeShift CEO, said that they identified “pieces of evidence” that suggested that their server was compromised. In such a situation, the company decided to do away with the old infrastructure and rebuild in a wholly new and safe environment.

Voorhees further explained that as ShapeShift doesn’t hold customer balances, customer funds are not at risk even in the case of a security breach.

“A portion of our own hot wallet inventory funds were taken, but nothing that will interfere with operations once our new environment is online”, he added. “We've built customer protection into our platform – hacks may be inevitable, but customer losses should not be. Not a cent of customer funds was lost, nor could they have been.”

He added that customers with pending orders would receive their funds within 24 hours.

At the time of writing, the website is still down. In a Sunday night update, Voorhees said that more details on the matter will be provided later and “likely a fill post-mortem of this incident for the public”.

“ShapeShift's service will be offline for at least another 48 hours while we continue to work. There is no danger or risk that ShapeShift will not be coming back online, but it needs to be done with diligence. We are learning some interesting things”, Voorhees wrote.
