In August 2026, spot trading volume on large centralized cryptocurrency exchanges increased significantly, up 19% from month to month to reach $510.4 billion. This is the biggest monthly increase noted thus far this year. Rising activity was broad-based; 13 of the 14 monitored major markets showed higher volumes, which suggests a general market comeback instead of a spike focused on one platform. Even if overall volume rises, Binance, OKX, and Coinbase taken together represent 64.8% of the total spot volume, hence defining the top exchanges.
This increase in trade activity fits with a more general "risk-on" mood across August's financial markets. Over the month, Bitcoin (BTC) saw a significant price increase of about 24% while Ethereum (ETH) saw a 30% rise, which together helped to push the overall cryptocurrency market capitalization from about $2.24 trillion to $2.70 trillion. With around $233 billion traded in August, Decentralized Exchange (DEX) spot volumes also remained strong, suggesting a general recovery in crypto market participation across both CEX and on-chain locations not restricted to centralized exchanges.
