‘Black Mirror’ season 4 is expected to debut on Netflix sometime in early 2017 and will consist of 12 episodes. It was speculated that season 3’s episode “San Junipero” may possibly get a sequel.
According to The Mirror, the British anthology television series featuring speculative fiction on the implications of modern technology is set to return for a fourth season on Netflix sometime in early 2017.
Season 4 will be composed of 12 episodes. Season 3 was commissioned for 12 episodes but only aired six episodes so far since its debut on Netflix on October 2016. Season 1 and 2 only had three episodes each.
The series was created by English satirist and broadcaster Charlie Brooker. Brooker also executive produces the series together with Annabel Jones. Brooker expressed his enthusiasm for the series during a previous interview saying, “I’ve always been a fan of one-off, quirky, weird stories you’d see on ‘The Twilight Zone’ or ‘Tales of the Unexpected,’… Also, the BBC would put on one-off plays that were often controversial or incredibly depressing. I missed those shows where you would run to someone and say, ‘This guy was the last man on earth, and he broke his glasses, and it was amazing!’”
According to Express, Jones confirmed season 4 during season 3’s launch. She said, “When you're ready to do the next series you do [it]… Thankfully Netflix loved the show, stepped in and commissioned six films. So that allows us to play out on a bigger canvas, and take more risks, explore worlds without destabilising the Black Mirror sensibility.”
She added, “It's great. And we've got another season coming up too.”
It was speculated that season 3’s popular episode, titled “San Junipero,” starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis is set to get a sequel in the incoming season. According to Blasting News, “San Junipero” stood out from the series since it ended on a uniquely positive note.
However, seasoned ‘Black Mirror’ director Owen Harris warned that Brooker may not want to pursue two happy endings. Harris also directed season 2’s episode 1, titled “Be Right Back,” which also dealt with death and the afterlife. It starred Hayley Atwell of ‘Agent Carter’ fame and Domhnall Gleeson best known for his work on the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise as well as ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’
‘Black Mirror’ season 4 is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2017. The series was first broadcast in 2011 on the British Channel 4.
