U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York on Sunday for talks covering artificial intelligence security, trade and other major economic issues, according to a person familiar with the plans.
The meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) at JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters in Manhattan. The talks come just days before U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on Thursday and Friday.
The Bessent-He meeting could provide another opportunity for Washington and Beijing to address key economic issues ahead of the Trump-Xi discussions. AI security and trade are expected to be among the subjects on the agenda as the two countries continue navigating their complex economic relationship.
JPMorgan Chase is not participating in the talks, the person familiar with the planning said. The bank agreed to make its New York headquarters available as a venue because of heightened security conditions in Manhattan ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, which begins next week.
Bessent has previously engaged with JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon on economic issues. The Treasury secretary invited Dimon to participate in a Group of 20 finance leaders meeting hosted by the U.S. Treasury in Asheville, North Carolina. During that gathering, Dimon discussed prospects for private-sector growth.
Dimon is also among the American corporate executives invited to attend a state dinner for Xi at the White House next week, according to U.S. officials.
However, the JPMorgan chief did not participate in the delegation of U.S. business executives that traveled with Trump to Beijing in May, when the U.S. president last met with Xi.
Sunday’s discussions between Bessent and He will take place against the backdrop of preparations for the upcoming Trump-Xi meetings, with trade, artificial intelligence and broader U.S.-China economic relations remaining important areas of bilateral engagement.
