Austrian Postal Service rolls out digital currency purchase option

Austrian Post Office branches earlier this week rolled out the option to purchase bitcoin and other digital currencies to its customers.

Bitpanda, a Vienna-based cryptocurrency exchange, made the announcement in a blog post. The offline purchase of digital currencies has been facilitated through the cooperation with Österreichische Post, Austria’s postal services provider. Bitpanda said:

“The cooperation between Europe’s leading digital currency platform and the traditional ‘Österreichische Post AG’ which has the best distribution network, proves the fact, that Bitcoin is no longer only a topic of a small community, but is now triggering a fundamental breakthrough in the economy and society.”

Customers can now purchase digital currencies at a favorable price via “bitpanda to go” in all 1,800 Post branches in the country. They can now change cash into bitcoins worth 50 €, 100 € or 500€.Customers will receive a code on a receipt, which can be entered on bitpanda.com/togo. They would also be able to see the current exchange rates for the respective currency.

“You select the chosen digital currency such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash or Litecoin and after entering the code, within seconds the amount of your chosen currency will be transferred into your wallet”, it said.

The feature was rolled out on 10 July 2017.
