‘Westworld’ season 2 is set to explore Dr. Robert Ford’s mysterious plan as hinted by showrunner Jonathan Nolan. It was also speculated that the new theme park “Samurai Park” may be featured in the incoming season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, season 1’s finale “The Bicameral Mind” managed to drop a couple more twists before setting up the events for a sophomore run on HBO.
It was revealed that Jimmi Simpson’s William is indeed the younger version of Ed Harris’ Man in Black and that Evan Rachel Wood’s host Dolores was the key to unlocking Arnold (Jeffrey Wright) and Dr. Ford’s (Anthony Hopkins) final maze. Dr. Robert Ford was also assassinated by Dolores, bringing the intricacies of season 1 to a close.
Meanwhile, Maeve (Thandie Newton) attempted to escape Westworld with Felix (Leonardo Nam), Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) and Armistice (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal). In the course of their escape, they are led to a different part of the complex distinguished with a new circular "SW" logo rather than the familiar "W” one. The new section is populated by hosts that are not Western outlaws but Samurai warriors – hence, “Samurai World.”
Although visuals of the actual park remain unseen and its real name is yet to be uttered, it was speculated that other parks may exist apart from Westworld. It is possible that this “SW” section will be featured in the incoming season, according to Bustle.
Meanwhile, executive producer Jonathan Nolan teased the incoming season in a new featurette. According to Screen Crush, he said, “If the first season was defined by control, the second season is defined by chaos. That’s part of what we come to understand Ford has been planning all along… Ford has set in motion what he thinks is a plan.”
Nolan continued, “The nature of that plan is something we explore in the second season. What his intentions are: are they to let Dolores or the other Hosts escape? Are they simply to teach the human guests a lesson?”
‘Westworld’ season 2 was renewed on HBO last November 2016. It is expected to return sometime in 2018.
