The “Supernatural” panel at the San Diego Comic-Con revealed a lot of details about the upcoming “Supernatural” Season 14, although the cast and showrunners did keep many things vague. The conference saw a clip that is not yet viewable online but which hints at a possible offensive action by the Winchester brothers. The reason for the shorter season was also revealed, which isn’t really a big deal since fewer episodes is actually a good thing.
As GameSpot reports, the panel saw a teaser trailer for “Supernatural” Season 14 that featured Sam (Jared Padalecki) speaking to Dean (Jensen Ackles) about how they have always been on the defensive. The younger Winchester asked a question that has been on the minds of many fans through the decade-long run of the show.
"Do you ever feel like we're doing nothing but playing defense, bouncing from one apocalypse to the next?" Sam asks.
This is a really good point to make, especially for “Supernatural” Season 14, since every season has seen the Winchester brothers preventing, causing, and ending apocalyptic events. Perhaps it’s finally time for them to actually take preemptive measures and go on the offensive. It wouldn’t be such a far-fetched idea, especially now that there are hunters from the other world to help them out.
Thanks to the shorter “Supernatural” Season 14, this could also work to make the story more focused. The actors recently revealed to TV Guide why this season has fewer episodes than previous ones. Apparently, it has to do with having more time off.
“We both have families,” Jensen Ackles explained, “it's more about how can we make our work-life balance a little better. And shaving a couple of episodes off gives us almost an extra month out of our year, which when you only get about a two-and-half-month hiatus, it goes by really quickly."
Having fewer episodes is not a bad thing because of how it can put more emphasis on consistent story flow. This might just make “Supernatural” Season 14 the most coherent season for the show to date. Viewers will find this out when it premieres on Oct. 11 on The CW.
