Fans are still waiting for “Sherlock” season 5 despite the lack of update from BBC. the last season ended in 2017, so it has been two years, yet the said TV broadcasting network still refused to release information or even just a confirmation for its renewal. Does this mean that the series was already axed from the programming lineup?
It should be noted that while BBC is not saying anything about “Sherlock” season 5, its creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat said in the past that the show can still air at some point. They admitted in 2017 that they do not have plans for the fifth installment yet, but they are not closing their doors for it.
“I haven't really thought about it,” Steven Moffat told Digital Spy. “Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series."
Gatiss and Moffat stated that despite not being renewed yet, they feel that “Sherlock” season 5 will arrive. However, they do not know yet when it will be because scheduling is one of the factors that is delaying the production on the series. The former also revealed that they probably need at least four years before they could set everything up.
“It was very, very, very difficult to schedule the fourth series concerning Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman’s (John H. Watson) availability, and everyone’s availability, so it’s not easy,” Gatiss said. “It’s not a lack of will, it’s just about practicality.”
Now, the creators brought up “Sherlock” season 5 again early this year, and from just mentioning the show, there is a big chance it will be the duo’s next project. In their interview with Radio Times, they revealed that they are already done writing “Dracula” and set to begin filming. Once this is done, Cumberbatch and Freeman could be back in no time.
“Sherlock” season 5 is not yet renewed, but updates point to the fact that BBC will break its silence soon and make some announcement. Perhaps, it is coming in 2021 as the earliest time considering the cast and producers are still busy with their own gigs.
