‘Riverdale’ season 1’s new teaser featured Betty and Veronica kissing however, Lili Reinhart shot down rumors of the two characters being involved in a lesbian relationship. Meanwhile, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased the that Sabrina the Teenage Witch may make it on screen.
The new teaser for The CW’s upcoming teen-drama and thriller television series based on the characters from Archie Comics featured new clips including a flash of Betty and Veronica kissing in school. It was speculated that the two iconic characters would be involved in a homosexual relationship in the television adaptation.
However, Lili Reinhart shot down the rumors during a recent interview with Hollywood Life during the Television Critics Association press tour. The actress insisted, “There’s a group that very, very much wants it. It’s just in our show, they’re not romantically involved.” She added that Betty and Veronica are just not “sexually attracted” to each other.
She continued, “They’re soulmates in a friends’ way. Our show is not meant to be fan fiction. We give them a taste of it when they kiss, but that’s all it is… People love Beronica and they want to see them together, but that’s just not our show.”
Reinhart plays Betty Cooper, a smart and wholesome girl with a crush on her best friend Archie Andrews. She eventually befriends Veronica, a wealthy, confident, and intelligent sophomore in her school.
Other cast members include KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ross Butler as Reggie Mantle, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper, Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge, and Luke Perry as Fred Andrews.
The new series is described to be a darker and more subversive take on the original Archie Comics series that reached the peak of its popularity in the 1990s. The series is written by Archie Comics' chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, best known for his work on The CW’s “Arrowverse” series. It is also executive produced by Sarah Schecter and Jon Goldwater.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the new series could pave the way for another iconic character from the comics – Sabrina the Teenage Witch. According to Entertainment Weekly, Aguirre-Sacasa admitted, “Some people don’t even know that Sabrina is in the Archie family… There is absolutely a universe where Sabrina pops up in Riverdale or one town over in Greendale. Certainly, the priority is launching Riverdale and making sure that show is as good as it can be and as embraced as we want it to be.”
He added, “I’ll just tease that Sabrina has potential with a capital P.”
‘Riverdale’ is an upcoming teen drama television series scheduled to premiere on The CW on January 26, 2017 with episode 1 titled “Chapter One: The River’s Edge.”
