Doosan, KOEN to collaborate on offshore wind farm projects

The MoU should enable Doosan and KOEN to commercialize domestic offshore wind turbines by securing large-scale references.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) and Korea South-East Power Company (KOEN) will collaborate on 2GW offshore wind farm projects in Gyeongin and Jeju island and on floating offshore wind power systems and complexes.

Also included in the MoU between the two companies is to engage in technology exchanges for “commercialization of the 8MW large-capacity offshore wind turbine.”

According to Park In-won, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s Plant EPC Business Group, the MoU should enable the companies to commercialize domestic offshore wind turbines by securing large-scale references.

It would also help them revitalize the wind power industry to keep aligned with South Korea’s Green New Deal policy.

KOEN has the most extensive business plan in terms of the planned capacity for wind power.

It completed construction of the Yeongheung Wind Farm, the first wind farm to be built in Korea, in 2013, with Doosan supplying 10 wind turbines.

In 2017, KOEN completed construction of the Tamra Offshore Wind Farm, Korea’s first commercial offshore wind farm, via collaboration with Doosan.

In 2011, Doosan received international certification for South Korea’s first 3MW offshore wind turbine. Last year, it received another international certification for its 5.5MW offshore.

Doosan will commercialize an 8MW offshore wind turbine by 2022.
