Today, the world was graced with the first look at the cast of the upcoming anthology installment, “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”
In a Facebook post, the photo is of the magazine’s latest cover, with actors Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz, Darren Criss, and Ricky Martin in character. Ramirez, who will play the slain fashion designer, is donning an almost bald headpiece, loud button-down, and white pants as he sits in a chair. He grasps the hand of a blonde, pink dress-wearing Cruz, who plays sister and now fashion house chief Donatella Versace. Martin is seen leaning on Ramirez’s leg as Versace’s longtime partner Antonio D’Amico. Criss, who plays serial killer Andrew Cunanan, is in a blue shirt and glasses, and stands at Ramirez’s back.
The cast also had their individual photos as well. While Ramirez, Criss, and Cruz pose regally for their shots, Martin gets special attention from fans. In his photo, Martin as D’Amico posed in a very skimpy bikini, showing of a very muscled, tanned figure.
“American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” is based from on Maureen Orth’s book “Vulgar Favors.” The book, and the TV adaptation, will focus on the connection between the late fashion designer and Cunanan.
Writer Tom Rob Smith for Entertainment Weekly wrote, “Here are two men from comparable backgrounds that had all kinds of similarities...They came from parents who were striving but not wealthy. They had the Italian-heritage connection. This feeling of being an outsider. The sexuality connection. Why does one go on to become this incredible creator and great life force? And the other young man ends up destroying so much?”
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace” will debut on FX in early 2018.
