Hormel Foods Recalls Planters Nuts for Potential Listeria Contamination

Planters nuts were voluntarily recalled by Hormel Foods.

Hormel Foods LLC issued a recall and warning for the purchase of some variants of Planters nuts. The recall is limited to 4-ounce Honey Roasted Peanuts and Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts in 8.75-ounce canisters.

According to Fox Business, the two recalled nut products were produced at one of Hormel Foods' facilities. The affected batch is suspected of listeria contamination, so if consumed, there are health risks.

Voluntary Recall in the U.S.

Hormel Foods' recall of the Planters nuts is voluntary and was carried out even if there were no reports of injuries or illnesses resulting from the nuts' consumption. This is a precautionary measure as any Listeria monocytogenes infection may cause serious and fatal health conditions.

As stated in the recall announcement, healthy individuals who ingested the said dangerous organism could experience short-term symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, high fever, and stiffness.

It could be fatal for the elderly, young children, and those with weak immune systems. It was also mentioned that pregnant women can miscarriage or have stillbirths due to listeria infection.

Affected U.S. States

Hormel Foods mentioned that the possibly contaminated Honey Roasted Peanuts and the Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts were only produced and distributed in April. After the distribution, the company discovered that the products may have been contaminated with listeria.

Newsweek reported that the affected items were shipped to Publix distribution centers in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida. These were also delivered to Dollar Tree distribution warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

Customers must check the UPC code to determine if the products they are buying or have purchased are included in the recall. For Honey Roasted Peanuts, the code is 2900002097, and the best-before date is April 11, 2025. The Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts have the UPC code 2900001621 and are best-before April 5, 2026.

If a customer has the recalled items, they must be discarded or returned immediately to where they were purchased. Customers can get a full refund or replacement.
