Google Cuts Jobs in Key Programming Teams Before Developer Conference

Google announces layoffs in Dart, Flutter, and Python teams before its major developer conference on May 15.

Google LLC is laying off staff at its Dart, Flutter, and Python programming teams. Their termination was announced just weeks before the company developer conference, which will be held on May 15.

Money Control reported that the employees of these three teams had already been asked to leave. The latest layoffs also affect other units, but Flutter, Dart, and Python are the most affected groups. Google has not yet confirmed the exact number of individuals to be let go.

Why Google is Laying Off Team Members

The company fired about 50 employees last week for misconduct and opposition. They were part of the group that protested against Google's cloud deal with the government of Israel. The individuals also entered some company offices and were removed for their actions.

Tech Crunch mentioned that Google is terminating workers for this week's job cuts due to reorganization. This is the main reason, and the staff of the company's Python, Dart, Flutter, and other teams have already been notified of the layoffs.

Alex García-Kummert, the tech firm's spokesman, told Tech Crunch, "As we have said, we are responsibly investing in our company's biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead."

He added, "To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, remove layers, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities."

Garcia Kummert said Google is streamlining its structures to give its staff more opportunity to work on the company's most important and innovative developments and priority programs and projects.

Limited Company Job Cuts

Google explained that the layoffs only affect employees of some of its software development and programming teams. Moreover, it is not a company-wide job termination but an overhaul as part of the normal course of business.

The company said that the staff of Dart, Flutter, Python, and other affected teams will be given a chance to apply for other available job posts at the company. Google will support them if they want to apply for a new role at the company or elsewhere.
