PhD Candidate, University of Stirling
Fraser McQueen is pursuing a PhD in French Studies at the University of Stirling, with co-supervision provided by the University of Aberdeen. His research consists of a historically and theoretically informed comparative analysis of how literary, filmic, media, and polemical texts have contributed to the ongoing debates over the place of North African immigrants and their descendants in French society since 2005.
Of particular interest are the interplay between social, religious, and racial factors in the exclusion of post-immigrant communities; the ways in which the language of French universalism has been deployed to marginalise Muslims; and the potential of fictional texts to challenge or reinforce the hegemonic intellectual and media discourses structuring these debates and helping to maintain divisions along racial and religious lines. Current research areas include representations of veiling; discourses around radicalisation; and the putative role played by political 'elites' in either hiding or artifically creating an Islamist threat to French society.
