Dr. Shore-Lesserson will be presenting on the topic, “Do the benefits of Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) always outweigh the risks?” on Wednesday, April 19. Regarding the topic, she notes, “Echocardiography is critical for the conduct of many operative and interventional procedures. This has caused cardiac anesthesiologists to have become an invaluable part of the cardiovascular team as experts in perioperative or peri-procedural imaging. Intraoperative surgical repairs guided by perioperative TEE for decades, and now the introduction of structural heart interventional repairs has enabled advanced imaging techniques to grow exponentially. Cutting edge technology and 3D imaging has provided a clear and accurate approach to the structural heart.” But as Dr. Shore-Lesserson points out, “TEE is not without some risk, and a careful risk-benefit analysis should be conducted in all patients for whom this diagnostic modality will be offered.”
In addition, Dr. Shore-Lesserson and Dr. Bodil Steen Rasmussen, President of EACTA, will serve as moderators on the joint panel, “Robotic cardiac surgery - the future?” This panel brings together surgeons and members of both cardiac anesthesiology societies, the SCA and EACTA. Robotic cardiac surgery offers patients a minimally invasive approach to open heart surgical procedures that appeal to patients because of aesthetic advantages and enhanced operating conditions provided by robotic equipment. Panelists will discuss how they utilize the approach in their respective countries.
Dr. Shore-Lesserson is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Anesthesiology, and National Board of Echocardiography. In addition to her roles with NAPA and the SCA, she serves as Professor of Anesthesiology at Hofstra-Northwell School of Medicine and director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology in the Northwell Health System in New York. She is also involved with other medical cardiovascular disciplines as the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia (CVSA) Council. Currently, she is also the chair of the Committee on Patient Blood Management of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and she is the second Vice Chair for the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists PGA Annual Meeting. She is also working with the STS and Perfusion societies on an interdisciplinary project “Best Practices in Perfusion Management.” Further, Dr. Shore-Lesserson is heavily involved in research and lectures frequently at national and international scientific meetings having accomplished more than 100 visiting professorships and invited lectures.
