Global Geo-political Series: Russia & Iran strengthen ties despite Washington’s terrorism rhetoric towards Iran

While the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump continues to brand Iran as a terrorist state, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is strengthening ties with the country. The Syrian president Bashar-al Assad and Iran remain the closest Russian allies in the Middle East. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Moscow and met with President Putin on Tuesday. The two countries signed several bilateral agreements on Tuesday as the two countries came to their closest cooperation in decades over their joint support of the Assad regime. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Putin said that the trades between the two countries have increased more than 70 percent last year and it is truly good result considering that fact that it is achieved amid unstable global conditions and persistence volatility in the commodity and the currency markets.

The duo has agreed to close cooperation in energy especially in the development of oil and gas resources in Iran. Russia will also be building several nuclear reactors in Iran. This meeting came as an indication that the Russia-Iran close alliance remains strong and would continue before the meeting of the year takes place during the summer G20 when President Putin will be meeting President Trump, who has disavowed decades of anti-Russia stance during his campaign.
