Global Geo-political Series: China calls on North Korea and United States to reduce tempo

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi called on both the United States and North Korea to reduce their war of words tempo by hitting the break. Over the past few weeks, the United States and North Korea had been engaged in war rhetoric with both sides exchanging military threats. While speaking with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, the Chinese foreign minister said that it is important for both the sides to hit the break. Here is the full statement from the Chinese foreign ministry,

“On the evening of August 15, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, focusing on the exchange of views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang Yi said that the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is in full compliance with the common interests of all parties concerned, including China and Russia. China and Russia have maintained close coordination on the nuclear issue of the peninsula, reflecting the high level of Sino-Russian strategic cooperation. The current situation, China, and Russia should further strengthen the strategic communication, joint control of the situation, to maintain stability and promote talks, do not allow anyone to stir up trouble in the Russian side of the door. It is imperative to stimulate the words and deeds of the DPRK and the United States "brakes", to the tension to cool, to prevent the "August crisis."

Lavrov said that with the United States and South Korea will hold a joint military exercise, the situation on the Korean Peninsula may once again intensified. It is totally unacceptable to solve the DPRK nuclear issue by means of military force and must adhere to the peaceful settlement of the peninsula nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means. Russia is willing to continue to strengthen communication and coordination with China and make joint efforts.”

China and Russia have already tried to push forward a proposal that suggests a halt of North Korea’s missile testing in exchange for no more military drills between South Korea and the United States. While the South Korean President said earlier that there will be no military actions against North Korea without the South’s consent, the country is set to take part in a joint military drill with the United States beginning August 21st.
